What is CNC Tube Bending?

A Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) Tube Bender shapes hollow metal tubing (round, square or rectangular), steel pipe, and bar stock (round or square). Dayton Rogers' tube benders are equipped with a CNC unit programmed for precise and repeatable bends at high speeds. CNC Tube Bending is ideal for parts containing more than two bends.

To start the bending process, the operator feeds cut-to-length material into the bender's chuck. Once the material is locked in, the operator starts the process using a control panel. Next, the bender makes a bend and automatically readjusts and secures the material for the next bend. After the programmed operation has completed the series of bends, the chuck releases. Finally, the operator removes the part and inserts the next pre-cut tube or pipe.

What Should I Know Before Designing a Bent Part?

Although we suggest all bends in a part be designed around the same bend radius, our CNC bender can mix bend radii in the same part. Projects with multiple tight bends may interfere with the machine and prevent completion of all bends in one process. In this case, additional or alternate processes may be used to complete the part. Adjacent bends usually require a minimum amount of unbent straight tube between bends for clamping during bending. The maximum degree of bend allowed is 180 degrees.

If possible, designers should submit drawings early and remain open to minor design change suggestions to simplify the bending processes and maximize the part's quality. Dayton Rogers' tube bending experts will help you determine the feasibility of your design and choose the best methods to complete the parts.
